CONICS |
Conic sections. |
Classically the conics were studied as sections of a cone through an
arbitrary plane. The position of the plane with respect to the cone
determines the type of conic that appears. In general: - If the angle formed by the plane with the axis of the cone is greater than the angle formed by the generatrices of the cone with the axis, then an ellipse appears. . - If the angle formed by the plane with the axis of the cone is equal to the angle formed by the generatrices of the cone with the axis, then a parabola appears.. - If the angle formed by the plane with the axis of the cone is less than the angle formed by the generatrices of the cone with the axis, then a hyperbola appears. Exceptionally, degenerate conics (real or imaginary lines intersecting at a point or a double line) appear when the plane passes through the center of the cone. |
