ABSTRACT
In Spain there are 2.500 Km of lines
carrying low-volume traffic. Generally the term "lines with low-volume
traffic" has been taken to mean lines showing a deficit, but this is
not necessarily so; a line of this type can be profitable. To ilustrate
this, details are given of some technologies that allow reduction of
the cost operation and maintenance of lines of kind, applying the
techniques to infraestructure (track, turnouts and level crossings),
stations, vehicles and operation systems. Then applied rationally, as
part of a coherent planning, these techniques have given good results
in most cases.
