Noelia Fernández's Technical Project.
On the 11th of July, Noelia Fernández, student of the Máster de Ingeniería de Caminos, Canales y Puertos
of UDC, defended its Technical Project titled "Análisis comparativo y optimización estructural de diferentes configuraciones de jacket para
eólica offshore".
In the project, supervised by professors Ignasi Colominas and Iván Couceiro, Noelia proposes new models of substructures for offshore energy systems
and a reduction of their cost by means of a weight optimization of the structures. The study is focused also on the comparisson between optimized models of two main typologies: jackets
with three and four legs.

Manuel Casteleiro, in memoriam.
On Thursday the 22nd of April 2021 at his residence in A Coruña, Professor Manuel Casteleiro passed away at the age of 74.
Professor Casteleiro had a degree in Civil Engineering from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and a Masters and PhD degrees from American
universities of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Northwestern, respectively. After his return to Spain in 1975, and until 1992, he took up a Professor
position in Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos at Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña in Barcelona, in whose
construction and consolidation he intervened in a very active and significant way.
Among other academic positions he was, during this period, vice-rector of Faculty and (founder) director of the Departamento de Matemática Aplicada III.
In 1992 he relocated to Galicia, where he resumed his Professor position at Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos of the
Universidade da Coruña. His talent, expertise and academic vision left their mark in this recently-created university, where he was vice-rector of Faculty
as well, and were crucial in the foundational stages of this new school, being Director from 2005 to 2013. On the occasion of his retirement in 2017 he was
designed Professor Emeritus of Unviersidade da Coruña, in whose Escuela de Ingenieros de Caminos he was still working until a short while ago, when his
health suddenly and permanently deteriorated.
Manolo, as he was known by relatives, friends and students; was an extraordinary professor who dramatically influenced the education
of more than 40 promotions of civil engineers accounting for both schools to which he devoted his life. He carefully cultivated his teaching abilities,
educating thousands of engineers in Statistics, the course he teached year after year at the schools of Barcelona and A Coruña. To his clear thinking and
explanatory abilities, Manolo added a special knack: he captivated the audience from the very first words, with the precise tone, speed and assurance,
making just the needed stops to make each class an unforgettable moment.
Manolo was a brilliant researcher, internationally renowned, who drove the numerical methods and their application in Engineering forward
and his once students are today scientists that lead top-level research groups around the world. He was also a great manager in both universities he worked
at and one of the main advocates of the Centro Internacional de Métodos Numéricos en Ingeniería (CIMNE) and Sociedad Española de Métodos Numéricos en Ingeniería
(SEMNI), which he presided from 2003 to 2008. When taking office, he undertook a vow that his actions would only be driven by academic reasons, the respect to
the people and the greater good. This vow would never be broken.
Great figures are usually beacons that cast their light far beyond their professions. Manolo was a deeply inspiring man, and an excellent person.
He loved life. Behind his daunting presence hid a person as good as gold. He always fought to improve the world by using science, technique and technology as his
only weapons, and academic exquisiteness and personal honesty as his framework. Those of us who were lucky enough to work side by side with him, learned a lot
from him. We will miss him and we remember him.
May his soul rest in peace.
